A Emotional Event when Liam Rosenior Overcomes Barriers

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent tactician who knows football inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, as the Blues' pioneering black footballer, I would be lying to claim this moment does not affect me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team as a substitute in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, as their next manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the multi-club BlueCo which also owns Chelsea.

Statistics show only twelve black managers – excluding those holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began 34 in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and developed his game locally, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When kids observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that champions what's right… that's profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is an enormous step for Chelsea, for the capital, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Does the Data Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the Premier League's inaugural black head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering black English boss in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout English football corresponds with a lack of diversity at executive level.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's report, 43% of Premier League players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research from the equality organization found only 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

At senior coaching level, according to data provided by 11 clubs, the percentage is 2%.

For all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same eleven clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of his appointment as a the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of ability that exists in the ethnic minority communities... they desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to persist in work hard to break those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become one of only four permanent English head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's remaining major divisions in terms of homegrown representation.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 of the 18 are French.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all young English managers with a youth development pedigree are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's really inspirational to up-and-coming British academy coaches to see an individual land that job with his background and we hope he will be highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a five-month spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered to tackling inequality in football and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence coaching skill arguing that opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that significant under-representation results in a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "ashamed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member make a discriminatory remark. He pledged support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation in the dugout – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the Premier League's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
