The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
