France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.

The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.

French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats leaving the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.

Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential technique to disable the engines of the vessels.

The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former Interior Minister left office.

This was demonstrated in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a boat.

Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of northern France, although it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.

Strong winds are presently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking methods to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the past.

UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
