They're Doing to America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to erect it.

He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and presently a study predicted his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As bewildering as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of a powerful ruler arising; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.

The obvious and direct truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts advocates for a type of profound affection focused on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to observe the persistent defiance to Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided great solace to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to show up in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, through connection to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it special and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the most damaging about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and belief, a combination that committed US believers should be comfortable with.
